Unanimity in the Bern City Council: the political forum in the Käfigturm is to be continued with financial support from the city.
This should be a rare occurrence, as there are still a few right-of-center representatives in the city parliament.
Alexander Tschäppät has set up a mixed financing arrangement in which the federal government will have to contribute CHF 400,000 per year instead of the previous one million.
The Federal Council has spoken out against the new solution.
It no longer wants to provide funding for the political discourse in the Politforum in the Käfigturm.
This decision is petty and short-sighted.
The state policy committees of both Councils are more far-sighted.
They are in favor of the continued existence of the Käfigturm.
Now the councils have to decide.
The showdown will take place in the National Council on December 7.
If the National Council agrees, the Council of States should hopefully follow suit on December 14, 2016.
One thing is clear: it will be tight.
The good news is that many center-right politicians have held out the prospect of approval.
The left-green is also likely to vote yes. Link to the article in the Bund
