Statement on Swisstransplant in the Tagesschau

The Tagesschau reports on the security gaps in Swisstransplant’s transplant register. I was allowed to submit a quota. My analysis of this:

  • This behavior harms all people waiting for an organ transplant. Fewer people will be willing to donate their organs.
  • Opposition to the Transplantation Act, on which we are expected to vote on May 15, is growing.
  • Swisstransplant’s credibility is declining.
  • Trust in digital applications is dwindling.

My recommendations:

  • Immediately take the transplant register offline (again) until the data protection officer’s analysis is available and any deficiencies have been rectified. It must be possible to make the data available to the hospitals by other means.
  • Have an external penetration test carried out to check for security gaps. Make the audit report publicly available.
  • Finally start proactive communication with the public and answer questions asked by journalists.
